  • Thank you for a Great 2019

Thank you for a Great 2019

Wow, what an amazing year we have had! The dojo has gone from strength to strength with the standard of karate and the dedication of the students at an all time high.

    New Black Belts

This year we gained two more senior black belts with Sam Lenton and Brendan Young grading to shodan (1st dan). We also had Anthony Horgan successfully grade to nidan (2nd dan) and Monica Lester achieve jun-shidoin (junior instructor).  All these senior students have trodden their own unique path with many ups and downs to get to where they are. They are all now well positioned to help others on their journey to achieving a black belt in Chito-Ryu Karate. For the dojo it is fantastic to now attend classes where there is often 2-3 black belts in the front line!

We also had a new Little Champion Black Belt this year with Liam Glover achieving this rank. With a limited time frame to achieve this level (ages 4-7 years) it takes a lot of dedication, talent and hard work to get to a Little Champions Black Belt.

    Soke Cup Success

2019 was a Soke Cup year (Chito-Ryu World Titles), with six Gold Coasters attending the Chito-Ryu Karate World Titles in Penticton, Canada.  It was a great event bringing together the Chito-Ryu family from all around the world. The Gold Coast did very well winning three gold medals. Well done to everyone in the team for the support and encouragement you showed each other before, during and after the event. You certainly lived up to the dojo motto of “Achieving Personal Excellence Together”. You can read the full report of the Soke Cup here => Soke Cup

The next Soke Cup is Japan 2022, it is never to early to set your goal to be part of the 2022 team.

A significant milestone for Australian Chito-Ryu occurred over the Soke Cup weekend with Sensei Michael Noonan from the Sydney dojo successfully grading to the teaching title of Kyoshi (equivalent to a professor). He has become the first Australian to reach this level, and one of a few in the world. A very fitting reward for 40+ years of dedicated study.

    Awesome Leaders

A huge thank you to all our leaders who do such an amazing job in the classes. The number of leaders capable of taking a class on their own is growing and there are more developing these capabilities. The leadership skills being developed will allow those that wish to go down the path of teaching karate or even opening their own dojo to do so with a strong experience base behind them. Currently we have Senpai Sam Lenton taking the Saturday classes and Sensei Monica Lester taking an evening class each week. They have been doing an awesome job, with everyone raving about their classes. I have received nothing but glowing praise in the feedback for both of them.

My vision for the future is for a number of dojos around the Gold Coast region with great leaders such as this supporting each other and sharing the Chito-Ryu way with more and more Gold Coasters.

    New Classes in 2019

This year we commenced weekday day classes on Tuesday and Thursday (from 9:15-10:15) providing an opportunity for parents, shift workers and home schooled kids to participate in karate classes. These day classes are slowing growing in popularity. From discussions with the Sunshine Coast dojo their day classes started slowly as well but have now progressed to be one of their largest classes with very dedicated students. If you would like to join these classes in 2020, please speak with Sensei Adam.  They are a great class for parents to take some time to work on themselves.

We have also added a Saturday morning fitness class which has been very popular.  This class is run by Senpai Sam Lenton.  The fitness class is open to members and non-members (you don’t have to know karate) and is a great way to start the weekend.

Thank you to all our Parents and Families who Support us to enjoy Karate

It is a great honour that you allow me to guide you and your children through the karate journey. It is my goal that through karate I can help all our students develop skills that will carry through to all areas of their lives and see everyone transfer the success that they achieve in karate into a successful life. I appreciate the time that parents take to bring their children to karate and the time that partners and spouses give up to allow us to do karate. It would not be possible to do the thing we love without your support.

Some of our students are lucky that they live near the dojo, but others drive a fair distance to get to us (we have students that come to us from as far away as Brisbane & Beaudesert) passing other karate schools to get to our dojo. I am thankful for the extra effort you go to to be part of Gold Coast Chito-Ryu Karate.

I would also like to make a special mention of Joshua Sheath who has moved back to New Zealand for a couple of years to complete a nursing degree. Joshua has kept up his training when he can around work and studies and has made a point of getting back into the dojo when ever he has come back to Australia. To keep his focus and commitment to be part of the Gold Coast dojo from that far away is pretty special.

    Annual Award Winners

The annual award winners will be announced tonight at the End of Year Break-Up. At Gold Coast Chito-Ryu Karate we do not give out many awards so to be considered for an award is pretty special. This year was perhaps one of the most difficult ones I have had in choosing the winners with so many amazing students to choose from. Our final winners are very deserving of their recognition but everyone should be proud of what they have done throughout the year.

    What’s happening in 2020?

We have another great year planned.  Our class schedule has been working well so we will be keeping it the same with just one little change.  Adults who wish to train with their children in the junior class are welcome to. The classes will be primarily focused on the juniors but their will definitely be enough to keep the parents going.

There will once again be 4 tournaments in QLD for students to challenge themselves to achieve their best.  The dates are still to be confirmed but at this stage look like being:

    1. Gold Coast Tournament – Sunday 1 March
    2. Sunshine Coast Tournament – Sunday 31 May
    3. Gold Coast Cup – Sunday 9 August
    4. QLD State Titles (Sunshine Coast) – Sunday 13 September

We will also be holding our seasonal gradings for Juniors and Seniors (dates to be confirmed)

    1. Autumn Grading – Friday 20 March
    2. Winter Grading – Friday 5 June
    3. Spring Grading – Friday 4 September
    4. Summer Grading – Friday 4 December

In March I will be taking a small group of senior students with me for a weeks training at the headquarters in Japan.

In May 2020 the Gold Coast will be hosting the annual QLD Chito-Ryu Karate Camp.  This is a great weekend of karate that everyone should try and be part of.

We will be having special guest instructors including Soke, Higuchi Kyoshi, and Phillips Shihan.

And we have a number of other fun events planned such as Beach Training, Kangeiko, Seminars, Parents Night Out and more.

It is shaping up to be a big year and I can’t wait for you to be part of it!

Once again thank you all for allowing me to be your Sensei.  I hope you have a wonderful and safe holidays and look forward to seeing you back in the dojo on Tuesday 7 January.

    Kind Regards

    Sensei Adam

P.S. There are many ways to grow our dojo but the best way is word of mouth so please tell all your friends about us and invite them to come be part of great karate family. We are happy to provide a free trial lesson to anyone you bring with you so they can experience our dojo for themselves.

  • 2019 Beach Training & BBQ

    2019 Beach Training & BBQ

A beautiful morning for some karate with the light smoke haze from the fires dulling the glare of the sun.  A good number of students from Gold Coast Chito-Ryu Karate where in attendance all set to have some karate fun as well of course with traditional karate training.

Training started with 20 minutes of seiza (meditation) followed by Kihon (basics) using the sand to increase awareness of our karate training and strengthening our body. Next up was a split into 3 groups with the adults working on the Bo (staff) and the kids rotating between karate kata and karate fitness work.

In the end where some demonstrations of different karate and kobudo kata with those that knew it joining in. And lastly some of the group finished up the training with some exercises in the water including karate kicks and jumping kicks.

After training we all went back into the park for a Bacon and Egg role and a few ball games thanks to the support of the GC Chito-Ryu Karate Club Inc.

  • New Gold Coast Black Belt

    New Gold Coast Black Belt

Congratulations to Gold Coast Chito-Ryu Karate-ka Brendan Young who successfully graded to Shodan at the QLD Chito-Ryu Karate Brown and Black Belt camp on the weekend.

Everyone travels a different path to achieve their Chito-Ryu black belt and Brendan is certainly no different having come to Chito-Ryu Karate with a high level dan rank and many years of training in another system of karate behind him. Bringing those skills to a new dojo and “starting again” indicates a humble person that is more interested in learning and developing than in collecting ranks. A rare but very admirable trait.

Brendan’s existing skills saw him excel quickly in some areas but then struggle with other technical aspects of Chito-Ryu Karate having to overcome the challenge of unlearning old habits to be able to adopt new habits and techniques.  Through perseverance and hard work Brendan has learnt a lot about himself, his bio-mechanics, and his karate as a result of this process. There have been many ups and downs along this path but Brendan has shown his true spirit and character to push through them all to be in the position to challenge for and successfully achieve his goal.

With such strong character, determination, and skill level we are proud to have Brendan as part of the Gold Coast Chito-Ryu Karate-Do yudansha.

Congratulations Brendan Young on achieving your Chito-Ryu Karate Black Belt.

  • World Title Success!

    World Title Success!

Our team for the 2019 Soke Cup held in Penticton, Canada has returned achieving a great result with 3 Gold medals and 6 Bronze Medals. Whilst results are awarded to individuals it was the contribution of everyone in the team through the months of training, preparation and support right up until they stood on the mats that led to the great results. Karate is an individual pursuit conducted in a team environment.

The Gold Coast team joined the rest of the Australian team for training in the park at Penticton before the event.  This was a great opportunity for everyone to get together and do some last minute fine tuning.

One of the highlights of the Soke Cup is the International Clinic where Chito-Ryu Karateka from all over the world are able to train together.  For this Soke Cup we took advantage of the beach outside of the hotel with morning seiza and training with over 100 participants (plus a couple of ducks and a Gulls, and Canadian Goose). It was a pretty nice setting for training. After breakfast training continued inside with a focus on Chinto and Chinto bunkai.

The grand champion trophies for the Soke Cup were handcrafted by local Indian artists and presented to Soke at a special presentation the day before the event. Instructors from all competing countries along with a representation of the Kyoshi were present.

Competition was spread over 3 days with qualifying events on Friday and Saturday and the finals on Sundays for most divisions. The opening ceremony was held on the Saturday morning as most of the events were being run on the Saturday.  As always it was an awesome feeling walking out behind the Australian flag representing the Gold Coast dojo with pride. The opening ceremony involved a welcome from organisers, a welcome from a representative of the local Indian group, a welcome by Soke, and the competitors and officials oaths. The rendition of a traditional song by the Indian group was very moving.

After the morning events on the Saturday a demonstration was conducted by Soke, Sodai and Higuchi Kyoshi.  The opportunity to see such advanced technique was inspiring.

Three days of competition flew by with many exciting events.  The Australian team did very well with lots of medals. The Gold Coast Team performed exceptionally well with some great results:

  • 2019 Soke Cup Team

    2019 Soke Cup Team

July 26 – 28 the 2019 Soke Cup is being held in Penticton, Canada and 5 members of the Gold Coast dojo will be representing the Gold Coast dojo and Australia at this prestigious event.

The Soke Cup is the world titles for Chito-Ryu Karate-Do and is only held every 3 years.  This event brings together the Chito-Ryu community from all over the world for training, competition, and building stronger relationships.

The Gold Coast dojo has always performed strongly at the Soke Cup providing proof of the excellent level and commitment of students we are lucky to have. This years team is made up of 5 experienced team members who are all in strong positions to take out a medal. Their training had been building since last year working on developing strength, fitness and skills through a series of Soke Cup Clinics, regular dojo training and weekly Wednesday morning fitness sessions.

Your team is now ready to do their best at the 2019 Soke Cup!

    Meet the Team

    Sensei Adam Higgins

This will be Sensei Adam’s 7th Soke Cup, it will be over 20 years since his first Soke Cup in Toronto, Canada in 1998.  Sensei Adam has won kumite Gold at the 2013 Soke Cup in Hong Kong in the Black Belt Masters Division and will be looking to repeat this result.  Sensei Adam has also meddled as part of the Australian Men’s Kumite Team on a number of other occasions. In kata Sensei Adam’s best result to date has been a third at the 2017 Soke Cup in Kumamoto, Japan a result that he is keen to improve upon.

For Sensei Adam the best thing about the Soke Cup is:

“The great sense of camaraderie between all the different nationalities, the fierce competition and the opportunity to train alongside Chito-Ryu Karateka from all over the world”.

    Sensei Anthony Horgan

Sensei Anthony has shown his commitment to Gold Coast Chito-Ryu by regularly driving from Brisbane to attend classes and training sessions. He has represented the Gold Coast at 4 previous Soke Cups first competing at the 2007 Soke Cup in Bergen, Norway where he went on to win the novice men’s kumite and kata gold medals. In 2010 in Kumamoto, Japan he added another gold medal winning the men’s intermediate kumite and placing second in kata as well as being part of the Australian Team Kumite Team which came third. In 2013 Sensei Anthony moved up in to the Black Belt division coming a very credible 2nd in a very strong division, as well as making the finals in the kata division. A fantastic effort for his first time in the Black Belt division.  At the 2017 Soke Cup Sensei Anthony was a part of the Australian Men’s Team Kumite Team who won the silver medal, the equal best result ever for the Australian Team.

Sensei Anthony is obviously keen to get that Gold Medal for Australia as he is most looking forward to:

TEAM KUMITE GOLD MEDAL FIGHT MATCH!!!!

    Senpai Sam Lenton

This will mark Senpai Sam’s third Soke Cup having first competed at the 2013 Hong Kong Soke Cup. Senpai Sam has competed strongly at previous Soke Cups, medaling, making finals and always giving her all. These results have come on the back of strong performances locally where she is always a strong competitor.  Senpai Sam has been working very hard in preparation for this Soke Cup.

For Senpai Sam she is looking forward to:

“Seeing the development and progression in people I’ve met and become friends with at previous Soke Cups. Also just the chance to perform what I’ve been working on for all these months. But, for me, the most important part of Soke Cup isn’t the event itself; it’s the preparation and training that we put into it, the teamwork, and the camaraderie. This year that has been especially true as I’ve worked with Brendan and Adrian as a team for team kata – that has been the best thing about Soke Cup already. Then cheering on my friends when we get there … fantastic”.

    Brendan Young

Brendan will be attending his second Soke Cup after a very successful first Soke Cup in 2010 at Kumamoto, Japan where he was awarded the Master Intermediate Tournament Champion award. A fantastic result for his first Soke Cup. Brendan was also part of the 2nd placed Australian Men’s Team Kumite team and will be keen for the team to once again make the finals for this prestigious event and challenge for the gold.

For Brendan the highlight for the Soke Cup has already occurred:

“What I am looking forward to has already happened…the way the team has grown closer and the development that each and every one of us has had together and individually… that is the big winner for me”.

    Adrian Spoto

Adrian is the sole rookie for the Gold Coast Team attending his first Soke Cup at Penticton. Adrian brings some strong kumite results with him to this event having won the last two Australian Men’s kumite titles and the last QLD State Kumite Title.  With a style well suited to the Soke Cup we are excited to see how Adrian performs.

For Adrian he is most looking forward to:

“Honestly, just to experience and compete in a Soke Cup! I know its broad, but the whole experience I am looking forward to as its my first competition at this level.”

As well as the Gold Coast Team Members Australia will be well represented with Competitors and referees from the Sunshine Coast, Blue Mountains and Tasseikan (Sydney) dojo in attendance.

Updates for how the team is going will be posted on our facebook page www.facebook.com/gckaratekobudo.

You can also check out a gallery from our team photo shoot on the facebook page (we may not be models but we had some fun!)

Note:  During the Soke Cup period we will be running a special reduced class schedule. A huge thank you to our senior students who have tried to cover as many classes as possible over this period.  You can download the schedule here => July 2019 Class Cover
