  • 2021 Kangeiko

    2021 Kangeiko

A small group of keen karateka attended the 2021 Kangeiko (Special Winter Training) held along the Twin Falls Circuit at Springbrook in behind the Gold Coast.

The morning started with a beautiful clear day that had everyone thinking that it may not be that cold, that was until we stepped out of the cars to feel the full force of a cold westerly wind 🙂 Oh well just another challenge to add to the training.  A large part of Kangeiko is learning how to control the emotions and not let negative elements such as the cold interfere with the training.

Training started with a run through of kata at a beautiful outlook where you could watch the sunrise over the hinterland and Gold Coast. Fully exposed to the wind it was a great opportunity to work on mushin.

Next stop was a favorite place were the track crosses a small creek. This is a beautiful location that is perfect for some meditation. This was followed by some physical challenges and partner work. The variance of a rough ground and narrow pathway made an interesting change from training in the dojo.

The track then makes it way down the side of the cliff before continuing along the bottom. There are some great sites and it is always a treat to be able to walk behind one of the many waterfalls on this track before making our way to the next stop which is at the bottom of twin falls.  Here we did some kihon training and work with the bo. Speed exchange training with the bo moving backwards fast along the path was an interesting challenge as you had to have confidence in your stepping to make sure you went straight and not veered off the path.

Our final stop was at Rainbow Falls were everyone got to experience training under the waterfall. The water was nice and cold and provided another opportunity to work on mushin, spirit and developing internal heat through breathing exercises.  The sensation after being under the waterfall is a unique one that had everyone buzzing as we made our way back up to the cars and back home.

  • Ground Self-defence Seminar

    Ground Self-defence Seminar

Members of the Gold Coast Chito-Ryu Karate Dojo took advantage of the opportunity to learn some basic self-defence techniques from the ground in a special seminar on Friday. The seminar was led by Adam Glachan, a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and covered what to do when caught in common positions on the ground. The primary emphasis was on how to escape and get back to your feet safely which was a very valuable lesson especially for the young girls in attendance.  We also covered some attacking techniques from the ground including arm-locks and chokes.

The seminar was very enjoyable and everyone walked away with a little more confidence with what they could do if they ever found themselves in a dangerous position on the ground.

Thank you to Adam for sharing his knowledge.

  • Super Hero Day

    Super Hero Day

Our Super Heroes pushed through the adversity to celebrate our Super Hero Day class with lots of colour and energy. With the recent Covid restrictions it was understandably a smaller group than normal for this fun day on our karate calendar, but we still all managed to have the same great smiles and laughs as found in previous years Super Hero Day.

What is Super Hero Day? This is a special day held once a year where our karate kids get the opportunity to come to class dressed as their favorite superhero! We actually think they are superheroes all the time but for this special day they get to do the karate class dressed up in their costumes as well.

During the class the kids got to test their powers of focus, their courage and commitment, their jumping skills, and of course their superhero poses.

  • Senior Karate Training on the Gold Coast

Senior Karate Training on the Gold Coast

It was a pleasure to welcome Martin Phillips Shihan , Sandra Phillips Shihan and members of the Sunshine Coast Chito-Ryu Karate dojo to the Gold Coast for a Brown & Black Belt training seminar.  There was lots of great energy and sharing as the senior instructors shared their understandings and experience to help everyone better understand Chito-Ryu Karate technique.

For an outsider looking in it is often the question of what advanced techniques do senior karateka do at these special seminars? But for the serious karateka it is not so much about learning new advanced techniques, but more a matter of developing the basic techniques to an advanced level of understanding so that they can be applied in a broader range of applications.

The session started with kihon with Sandra Philips Sensei leading the way helping students understand how to develop more explosive effective techniques. The repetition building muscle memory and spirit as everyone pushed each other to go further and further.  This was followed by a focus on kata and trying to incorporate any insights that had arisen from the kihon practice with the senior instructors observing and passing on advice were required.

The next session was led by Adam Higgins Sensei exploring applying the basic principals of seichusen (centreline) and being able to move to a strong position to attack the opponents centreline without over committing. From this position of strength the next stage was to be in an alert ready state to take advantage of the opponents next movement.  The use of training knives was added for a bit more fun.

The final part of the training covered Chito-Ryu bunkai with detailed explanation of Niseishi  Bunkai and Henshuho 1-28 by Martin Phillips Shihan. Each technique was expertly demonstrated in the most correct form, then with different size partners and finally some variations where hinted at for future study.

A fantastic day of training that left all attendees with a few more pieces of the karate puzzle to continue to explore.  Everyone is looking forward to the next Queensland Brown & Black Belt seminar  on the Sunshine Coast on June 6.

    QLD Karate Camp

The QLD Chito-Ryu Karate Camp is held every year around April/May. The hosting of the QLD Karate Camp is alternated between the Sunshine Coast Karate Club (odd years) and the Gold Coast Karate Club (even years).

The camp is a great fun event where you get to immerse yourself in karate training with a great bunch of fellow karateka who love to train and learn karate as much as you do. General training starts on a Friday evening and continues Saturday and through to after lunch on Sunday. Accommodation, meals and bedding are all provided  in the cost of the camp.

Being immersed in karate is a great experience and from watching the growth and development of those that take part in the camp it is definitely a great way to accelerate your development.

The best thing about the camp is that the more people who come the better it is! Being in a hall with 100 other karateka letting out a roaring kiai is a buzz!

If you are keen to be part of the QLD Karate Camp download your rego form and get it back to your sensei ASAP to reserve your spot.

  • Committed to Black Belt Seminar

    Committed to Black Belt Seminar

On Sunday  8 November we held a “Committed to Black Belt” seminar at the Ashmore dojo.
At Gold Coast Chito-Ryu Karate we do not have any special “Black Belt Clubs” that provide extra opportunities for those that pay for it. As far as we are concerned every student that walks in the door and is committed to training is in our black belt club.

We do however hold a special seminar every couple of years where kyu grade students can come and attend a training session with the black belts, to experience how the black belts train as well as listen to advice and stories about how our black belts overcame their challenges and achieved their goals.

Adam Sensei also shares more about what he looks for and his expectations of students wanting to get a black belt. Being a black belt is more than just being good at kicking and punching. It is made clear that whilst everyone is able to get a black belt only a select few will have the commitment to do what is required to get there (and beyond).
It was a great way to start the day.
Thank you to those that attended and to all our yudansha for making the effort to help out the next generation of black belts.

  • Little Champions Tournament

    Little Champions Tournament

At the start of each year before the competition season begins we hold a Little Champions Tournament at the dojo.  This event in a familiar supportive environment gives our Little Champions a taste of what competition is like before the main events during the year.  We have always found this to be a great stepping stone event with many of the competitors going on to achieve great success at the bigger tournaments.

This years event saw a record number of competitors register and the standard was very high with so many of our Little Champions showing how hard they have been working recently. The winners were very deserving of their awards but there was many other competitors that could have easily taken one of the places as well.

I was very pleased with the courage shown by everyone in stepping up and having a go, you should be very proud of yourselves.  I was also exceptionally pleased with the fantastic manners and sportsmanship shown by everyone. A great example of what Chito-Ryu Tournaments are about.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Q. Is my child ready for tournaments?  (or am I?)

    A. Tournaments are a great learning experience no matter what age and belt level. Yes, they are nerve racking for both competitors and parents but from our experience all competitors come away with more confidence simply by being part of the tournament. The good thing about our Queensland Tournaments is that there is always plenty of support to help the students.

Of course if you really are not sure then please discuss with your instructor.

    Q. Do you have to do every event?

    A. No, you are welcome to enter only the events you are comfortable with.  For some people starting with just individual kata and/or team kata is a great first step towards tournaments.

    Q. How do I find a team for Team Kata?

    A.  Ask your friends to be in your team, ask your instructor, keep an eye out on the noticeboard or facebook for people looking for team members. When selecting team members it usually best to select team members of similar rank and age as the division you are in will depend on the level of the highest ranked team member.

    Q. What time will the Little Champions/Junior events finish?

    A. It is not possible to give exact times until all entries have been received and a schedule has been written up however as a guide we endeavor to have the 4-8yr olds finished before lunch, and ideally the 9-10 year olds as well. Of course you can leave after your events but we do encourage everyone to stay and watch the senior divisions as well.

    Q. What time will the Tournament finish?

    A. It is not possible to give exact times until all entries have been received and a schedule has been written up however as a guide we are normally finished our tournaments from around 2:30-3:30pm. Presentation of the Little Champions Tournament Champion is done before lunch.  Presentation of the Junior and Senior  Tournament Champions Trophies are done at the end of the event.

    Q. Is there an entry fee for spectators?

    A. There is no entry fee for spectators. We do however appreciate it if you can support the club by purchasing lunch and snacks from the canteen.

    Q. What equipment do I need?

    A. Everyone needs a karate gi and karate belt. If you are doing Kumite Tag you will need a mouthguard, if you are doing kumite you will need mouthguard, gloves, shin/instep guard and groin guard (males).

  • 2019 Beach Training & BBQ

    2019 Beach Training & BBQ

A beautiful morning for some karate with the light smoke haze from the fires dulling the glare of the sun.  A good number of students from Gold Coast Chito-Ryu Karate where in attendance all set to have some karate fun as well of course with traditional karate training.

Training started with 20 minutes of seiza (meditation) followed by Kihon (basics) using the sand to increase awareness of our karate training and strengthening our body. Next up was a split into 3 groups with the adults working on the Bo (staff) and the kids rotating between karate kata and karate fitness work.

In the end where some demonstrations of different karate and kobudo kata with those that knew it joining in. And lastly some of the group finished up the training with some exercises in the water including karate kicks and jumping kicks.

After training we all went back into the park for a Bacon and Egg role and a few ball games thanks to the support of the GC Chito-Ryu Karate Club Inc.
